Data Recovery For Computers

If you have work files, private financial information or bookkeeping stored on your computer, this could be the most important article that you will ever read. As with any electronic device, glitches can occur without warning and, when it comes to computers, they can often result in the loss of important files. But, what if there was some way to recover the data that you thought was lost? For many, this theory is music to your ears. The good news is, however, that it’s not a theory because your computer may have an excellent data recovery capability that you didn’t even know about.

The first and most reliable way to ensure data recovery is to make a back-up copy of your file(s) and store them onto a CD or another location in your computer. In some cases, you may even prefer to store a back-up file on a different computer. This will help greatly in the event that your original file becomes corrupted or is missing.

If you are operating your computer using Microsoft Windows XP, you may use the System Restore feature to undo harmful changes to your computer and restore its settings and performance. System Restore returns your computer to an earlier time (called a restore point) without causing you to lose recent work, such as saved documents, e-mail or history and favorites lists. As an added benefit, any changes that System Restore makes to your computer are completely reversible. You may access this feature by clicking on Programs, then Accessories and choosing the System Restore feature. This will work as an effective data recovery method for most computer users.

If you experience problems with your startup screen, you may be able to restart the system in Safe Mode. This will allow for you to make some changes and access several features in an effort to find the problem. In Safe Mode, you will only have access to basic files and drivers, but will not be able to logon to the internet.

If you are still experiencing difficulty with data recovery, you may find success with inserting the appropriate Restore/System CD that came with your computer. When prompted, you can choose to repair the system without affecting any data or software programs. To do so, restart the computer with the CD inside and press R to start the Recovery Console. From there, you can access the drives on your computer and make any needed changes. This approach is effective if the computer is experiencing a problem with startup or is not working properly and no other remedy will work.

If you are experiencing problems that none of the aforementioned methods will correct, your last resort may be to use the Windows Installation CD, which will reinstall the operating system to it’s original configuration. This will erase all files, including data files, which means the only way to have a successful data recovery using this method is if you have saved back-up copies that you can access via CD-Rom or another computer and transfer them onto the reinstalled system.

In conclusion, the most successful data recovery will come from back-up copies and/or being able to use the Repair feature without affecting current files or programs. In some cases, the manufacturer of the computer may be able to recommend additional steps for data recovery, but the most common ones are outlined above.

NTFS.Sys Corrupted after Running Disk Defragmenter

The NTFS file system has been designed to much less prone to corruption than FAT or FAT32 file system. But the corruption can still occur. One general NTFS-related issue involves corruption of Ntfs.sys file that can occur out of several reasons. If this file is corrupt or goes missing, it can render a Windows system unbootable and can make the partition inaccessible. You can repair or replace the file by using different methods through Recovery Console. But if they fail, you need a powerful solution to partition recovery.

For example, consider a situation when you try to run disk defragmenter on your Windows XP-based hard disk that is formatted to NTFS file system. The tool freezes and when you restart the computer after this, the computer fails to start giving the below error message:

“Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys”

You cannot access the disk partition.

Cause

NTFS file system has a driver file called Ntfs.sys, which enables your Windows computer to read/write data to NTFS partitions. The above problem results when this file becomes corrupted or is missing when you run disk defragmenter.

Solution

To solve the above problem, you need to repair or replace the Ntfs.sys file. For this, you can use any of the methods mentioned underneath:

Boot your computer using Windows XP installation to start Recovery Console as an administrator. You can then use command prompt to run the below commands:

cd \windows\system32\drivers
ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old

copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers

Where, cd and drive represent the drive letters of CD-ROM drive and primary partition

if this doesn’t solve the problem, it might be a disk-related issue. So, you can run chkdsk /r command from Recovery Console command prompt.

If the problem continues, you should repair or reinstall the Windows installation. To restore the deleted data after Windows reinstall, you should use your last backup.

At times, the backup doesn’t work as is found to be corrupted or incomplete. To deal with such problems, you should use a comprehensive partition recovery software. How to Quickly Perform a Clean Reinstall of Windows XP

Many people find themselves wanting to perform a clean reinstall of windows XP. However, most people immediately give up even before they start. This is because the reinstallation process could seem a bit complicated. But if you are presented with a quick and simple step-by-step guide, reinstalling windows XP is not difficult at all.

Before you start performing the clean reinstall, there are things you have to do first. First, list down all the hardware and software that you use. If your system is newly built, then you should already have a list of your hardware. If you don’t know what hardware your system is using, you can go online to get a listing of your system specifications. Then, you can also visit the manufacturer’s website to check if there are Driver Robot for your hardware. Important drivers include scanners, printers, pen tables, and so on. Also check for software compatibility. Usually, driver disks are shipped along with the hardware for newly built systems. Another option is using Windows 2000 drivers. Once you made a list of these, it’s time to create copies of any existing data and other important programs.

Now, you’re ready to do a clean install for Windows XP. First, change your CMOS settings of the BIOS for the boot order to boot from the CD. Once done, you can then boot your PC using the Installation CD.

After you have changed the boot order in the CMOS settings of your BIOS, save the changes, and then reboot your PC. Your installation CD should already be placed inside the CD-ROM. You will then be prompted to press certain keys to directly boot from CD-ROM emulation, usually the space bar. Do what the prompt says.

The installation will then begin copying the preliminary setup files to your PC. This might take some time, so be patient. Once completed, you can then start directing the install process.

You will be asked whether you want to do a new installation, repair and existing installation or quit. Since you want to do a clean reinstall, press the key corresponding to “perform a new installation”. Agree to the terms of agreement once you have read it.

Then, decide on which partition of your hard Driver Robot want to install Windows XP on. Just remember to keep partitions within reasonable size. A tip is to use multiple partitions of 4 to 8GB, and if possible, on more than just one hard drive.

Once that is decided, it’s time to format. You can format the partition either to NTFS, which is recommended for single OS install, or FAT32. Choose to do a full format. Once the partition is formatted, the setup program will automatically start copying files. Again, this could take some time so use it to take a break.

Afterwards, select your region and language, type in your name and organization and key in your product license key. Name the computer, type in an Admin password, and remember to take note of the password for future reference. Then, enter the accurate date and time. Select your network settings. If you are using a dhcp server to assign IP addresses, leave it automatic. But if you have static IP address for broadband Internet access, then use the settings provided by your ISP. Choose a domain name or workgroup, and register your copy of Windows XP (after installing all hardware on your system). Log in, update drivers, and you’re done!
