Computer Tips and Help: Buying a New Computer? Think “local”!

06 Jan

Technology has advanced so much during the past few years that any entry-level computer is going to have more than enough “horsepower” for the average computer user. So the days of being concerned about the size of the hard drive and speed of the processor have pretty much passed into history. RAM (memory) is still vitally important so I would not recommend any new system with less than 512MB. 1GB is even better; and if you’ve got your eyeballs set on the full, bells-and-whistles version of Windows Vista, 2GB will warm the cockles of Mr. Gates’ heart. One topic I always encourage when giving out computer tips and help to shoppers is to purchase locally, if at all possible. Virtually every community has one or more reputable computer shops that build computers. There are many advantages of purchasing locally as opposed to going through mail order or online through Dell,… Read More

Artificial neural network

Artificial neural network

An artificial neural network (ANN), usually called “neural network” (NN), is a mathematical model or computational model that tries to simulate the structure and/or functional aspects of biological neural networks. It consists of an interconnected group of artificial neurons and processes information using a connectionist approach to computation. In most cases an ANN is an adaptive system that changes its structure based on external or internal information that flows through the network during the learning phase. Neural networks are non-linear statistical data modeling tools. They can be used to model complex relationships between inputs and outputs or to find patterns in data.

Background

There is no precise agreed-upon definition among researchers as to what a neural network is, but most would agree that it involves a network of simple processing elements (neurons), which can exhibit complex global behavior, determined by the connections between the processing… Read More

?SMART failure predicted on primary slave? Hard Drive Error

05 Jan

S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) keeps check on the internal health of the hard drive and keeps reporting warning and errors upon finding any issue. It is a monitoring system of the hard drive that checks the drive upon certain factors of reliability like heat, spin-rate noise level, damaged hard disk sectors etc. Thus we can take preventive steps like complete data backup on the basis of S.M.A.R.T reports and avoid any Data Recovery in the near future due to physical failures.

S.M.A.R.T enabled hard drives may prompt an error at each startup, similar to:

“WARNING: Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent. S.M.A.R.T failure predicted on primary slave.”

Users are advised not to ignore this error message. The failure is impending and data must be backed up before it gets too late to be recovered through Hard DriveRead More

The Next Generation Of Computers Is Quantum Computers.

04 Jan

Taking the Quantum Leap

While it may seem that the evolution of computers is about at its end, that is not the case. The next generation of computers is quantum computers.

The reason behind continuing computer evolution is the continuing thirst we have for speed and capacity of our computers. Way back in 1947 an engineer and computing expert, Howard Aiken, predicted that all the United States need to satisfy its need for computers were six digital electronic computers. Other scientists and engineers that followed Aiken added to the volume they predicted as being adequately massive, but were also far too conservative.

What none were able to predict that scientific research would produce voluminous quantities of knowledge that needed to be computed and stored, nor did they predict the popularity of personal computers, and the existence of the Internet. In fact, it’s hard to predict if humankind will ever… Read More
